Future Shuttle Launches
Just because the space shuttle would most likely be doing a dead stick landings as it always does should not make any difference, as the runway at Cape Canaveral is huge and made for such emergencies. However the shuttle should be able to be guided back thru the clouds via a ground system, augmented reality simulator like the Global Hawk. True safety should begin with complete reality based thinking, back up systems and confidence in the abilities of the systems and those trusted to do their job. Additionally why would the astronauts need to see to fly the spacecraft/aircraft at that point? After all they practice such aborted launches after lift off in simulators, where they are not actually looking at the ground and also we have available now systems, which are even used in Business Jets for zero/zero visibility landings. The systems send out many very hot flare type pieces out of the back of the aircraft and fool the Surface to air missile into thinking that those are the targets, thus the missile goes after the chafe flares instead of the actual aircraft.

Concorde Crash Conspiracy - It Could Have Been Prevented
Had this been available it could have inspected the Space Shuttle prior to its return and prevented the accident by way of video preflight. Incidentally today NASA announced a spherical device to fly around the ISS-International Space Station to check for damage from space debris. This is an awesome idea and I would hope the US Military would put them on the catapults so when it returns it video tapes the deck. The young man's device is said to be able to spot even a single nut on the runway, which could be picked up by a tire or sucked into a jet engine. This shows why it is important to get ideas from everywhere and how contests spur on innovation.

During the big ceremony and media event following the third successful launch into space and safe return, the FAA was there to make a few comments. With the help of some Billionaire entrepreneurial investors they are poised to build an entire industry of Private Space Flight. They proved that private space flight is feasible and safe. The FAA needs to get their heads out of their rears and their fingers out of ours and I am not the only one who knows this. Luckily the fractional jet market has taken off, but only after the FAA ditched some of their onerous regulations.

Often we see drivers in cars sitting too low and can barely see over the steering wheel, when we rent an aircraft everything is in the wrong place.

Realize this technology is not yet available but will be within the next few years, especially considering the NASA budget for long-term space travel and trips to Mars. The plastic bag keeps out the bugs and would be coated with Tabasco Sauce to keep vultures who smell the flesh from tying to dig up or eat the human pilot. There is a solution or there will be soon as hibernation techniques and technologies become better. They have limited if any food supply and lots of people looking for them. Now then if a downed pilot could find a really good hiding spot, like a bear finds a cave for his hibernation and then go to sleep for a week or two, then by that time everyone looking for him or her will have given up.

As the webbing retracts it would run thru a roller system allowing it to take up very little space, as the area it retracts into will also hold fuel tanks and space would be limited. As the aircraft approached the speed of sound it would be completely retracted. As the folding spar comes back it would provide an end-cap covering the system as well as a small gate or strake on the protruding fuselage/wing tip. Without the wing on the aircraft efficiency would occur in less drag, meaning higher speeds, better range and fuel economy. At 450 to 500 Knots the wing would fold back to 26-degree and then at 550 to 600 Knots fold back to 45-degrees.

Another idea is to neoprene covered mini Frisbees made of high tech super strength plastic in the pockets of stewardesses, and in the event of a small breach they simply pick them up and toss them towards the hole which will suck them into place. This way bullets in cockpits intended for terrorists will not be an issue with pressure at those altitudes above 10,000 feet. The bottom of the bins would need to be a tad bit stronger such as carbon fiber to withstand the suction, but double strengthened re-enforced plastic, composite or fiberglass coated with rubber ought to work fine. In a 747 this is not too critical as the inlet for the pressurization cabin system is twice the size of a window and the pressurization system could keep up with a breach the size of a window.
